What Is A Perfume?
Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives, and solvents, used to give the human body an agreeable scent. It is usually in a liquid form and used to give a pleasant scent to a person's body.
The word perfume derives from the Latin perfume, meaning "to smoke through". Perfumery is the art of making perfumes.
History
Perfumery started in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and was further refined by the Romans and the Arabs. The first person to make a perfume was a woman named Tapputi and she was from Mesopotamia. She extracted oil from flowers added essential oils and calamus with other aromatics, then filtered and put them back in the still several times.
In India, perfume and perfumery existed in the Indus civilization. One of the earliest distillations of Ittar was mentioned in the Hindu Ayurvedic scriptures. The perfumes date back more than 4,000 years. Both the raw ingredients and the distillation technology significantly influenced western perfumery and scientific developments associated particularly chemistry.
Fragrance Notes
Perfume is described in a musical metaphor as having three sets of notes, making the harmonious scent accord. The notes unfold over time, with the immediate impression of the top note leading to the deeper middle notes, and the base notes gradually appearing as the final stage. These notes are created carefully with knowledge of the evaporation process of the perfume by companies.
There are three different types of notes that comprise the scent of most fragrances: top, medium, and base notes:
Top notes
: Also called the headnotes. The scents that are perceived immediately on application of a perfume. Top notes consist of small, light molecules that evaporate quickly. They form a person's initial impression of a perfume and thus are very important in the selling of a perfume. Examples of top notes include mint, lavender and coriander.
Middle notes
: Also referred to as heart notes. The scent of a perfume that emerges just prior to the dissipation of the top note. The middle note compounds form the "heart" or main body of a perfume and act to mask the often unpleasant initial impression of base notes, which become more pleasant with time. Examples of middle notes include seawater, sandalwood and jasmine.
Base notes
: The scent of a perfume that appears close to the departure of the middle notes. The base and middle notes together are the main theme of a perfume. Base notes bring depth and solidity to a perfume. Compounds of this class of scents are typically rich and "deep" and are usually not perceived until 30 minutes after application. Examples of base notes include tobacco, amber and musk.
The scents in the top and middle notes are influenced by the base notes; conversely, the scents of the base notes will be altered by the types of fragrance materials used as middle notes. Manufacturers who publish perfume notes typically do so with the fragrance components.
Modern Perfumes
Since 1945, due to great advances in the technology of perfume creation as well as the natural development of styles and tastes, new categories have emerged to describe modern scents:
Bright Floral
: It is a combination of the traditional Single Floral & Floral Bouquet categories.
Green
: A lighter and more modern interpretation of the Chypre type, with pronounced cut grass.
Aquatic, Oceanic, or Ozonic
: A clean smell reminiscent of the ocean, leading to many of the modern androgynous perfumes. Generally contains calone, a synthetic scent discovered in 1966, or other more recent synthetics. Also used to accent floral, oriental, and woody fragrances.
Citrus
: An old fragrance family that until recently consisted mainly of "freshening" eau de colognes, due to the low tenacity of citrus scents. Development of newer fragrance compounds has allowed for the creation of primarily citrus fragrances.
Fruity
: featuring the aromas of fruits other than citrus, such as peach, cassis (black currant), mango, passion fruit, and others.
Gourmand scents with "edible" or "dessert"-like qualities. These often contain notes like vanilla, tonka bean and coumarin, as well as synthetic components designed to resemble food flavors.
Preservation Of Perfumes
Fragrance compounds in perfumes will degrade or break down if improperly stored in the presence of heat, light, oxygen, and extraneous organic materials. Perfumes are preserved properly when kept away from sources of heat and storing them where they will not be exposed to direct light. An opened bottle will keep its aroma intact for several years, as long as it is well stored. However, the presence of oxygen in the headspace of the bottle and environmental factors will, in the long run, alter the smell of the fragrance.
Perfumes are best preserved when kept in light-tight aluminum bottles or in their original packaging when not in use, and can be refrigerated at relatively low temperatures: between 3–7 °C. Although it is difficult to completely remove oxygen from the headspace of a stored flask of fragrance. You can opt for spray dispensers instead of rollers and "open" bottles will help to minimize oxygen exposure.
Sprays do not get contaminated with either dist or skin which can alter the quality of the perfume.
Where To Apply Fragrances?
We’ve all been around men who used too much cologne. That totally is off-putting for women and men too. You can easily avoid this mistake by learning how to apply fragrance properly and judiciously.
Spray perfume on dry skin, preferably right after a shower. Hold the spray nozzle at a distance basically 3-6 inches from your skin while applying.
Start by applying one single spray on the chest.
As you become more comfortable and knowledgeable about how to wear cologne properly, you can add to the spray areas.
Apply fragrance to heat areas. Your body heat will enhance the scent throughout the day.
Start with the warmest parts of your body: chest, neck, lower jaw, wrist, forearm, inner elbow, shoulder.
Do not spray on all these points at the same time; start with one and then on the other areas.
Re-spray only when required. You can add more sprays to your wrists depending on how long the scent lasts.
Do not rub the perfume on the wrist. Rubbing the perfume into the skin seems a sensible thing to do. In reality, it breaks the molecular bond, making the scent weaker.
Don’t spray and walk as spraying a fragrance in the air and walking through the mist is worthless. Most of the fragrance drops straight to the floor and nothing gets to your clothes.
Don’t spray fragrance on your clothes. In this case, the fragrance isn’t allowed to mix with your oils, and hence it can’t naturally go through the stages of notes as it should. Also, the oils in a fragrance can stain many fabrics.
Don’t splash. Just press your finger on the opening of the bottle and take it on the finger and dab in on the desired body parts.
Fragrance should be discovered, not announced. People who are close by should be able to smell your cologne. Don't overpower it.

Perfumes are sprayed on the clothes and some pulse points whereas a deodorant is used directly on the body.
